Jamaica’s national obsession with really bad art

By First • Jun 16th, 2008 • Category: Art & Design

We scratch our heads each time we’re confronted by the Jamaican art on sale at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. It’s not just how awful it is, the ridiculously high prices, but rather what does it say about the quality of work being produced in the country?

However there is good work being done by local artists. But then you see things like this, usually in the Gleaner’s Sunday Arts section but this time on Jamdeal.com, and you have to worry for those probably poor artists who neither serve uptown tastes, nor produce the indigenous art ripping off tourists along the north coast.

Half a million dollars, this.
