Born in 1921 Seydou Keita was a studio photographer from Bamako, Mali. But by 1997 his work had traveled from their original asking price of a few dollars in his neighbourhood shop, to persuading Manhattan hipsters to part with US$16,000 for giant prints. Even Harper’s Bazaar commissioned him for a fashion shoot.

Mosengwo Kejwamfi, aka Moke the Painter, was considered a painter-reporter of life in Kinshasa, the city where he arrived as a ten-year-old orphan in the year of Independence, 1960. Moke soon began his career painting landscapes on old cardboard.
